History
Take the visual Journey with us to know and better understand the history of our temple.

Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple is widely believed to have originated in 1830 with a female devotee who placed a picture of Amman beneath a banyan tree near the present-day temple site.
The temple’s location, at the junction of Balestier, Serangoon, Race Course and Rangoon Roads, was once a popular area due to the presence of several wells and water points. Residents from the surrounding areas frequently visited the site to collect water for their daily needs.
In 1935, Mr Rengasamy Mooriyar developed the premises into a full-fledged temple and conducted its consecration ceremony, funding the expenses from his retirement savings. At the time, Sri Vinayagar, Sri Murugan and Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman were among the principal deities of the temple.
In 1943, Mr Kottavai Govindasamy further expanded the temple by introducing Sri Periyachi, Sri Muneeswaran & Sri Madurai Veeran as additional deities. During this period, the Aadi Urchavam Festival traditionally concluded with a procession of Ambal in a bullock cart to Sri Manmathan Temple in Potong Pasir. Ambal would remain there for approximately two weeks, during which prayers were conducted before the procession returned to the temple.

Following the demise of Mr S. L. Perumal in 1948, Mr S. L. Perumal took over the management of the temple. He was later joined by Messrs Murugaiyan, Samiyappan, Vairappa Thevar and Thangavel Mandor as committee members. Mr Karuupiah served as both the temple priest and its day-to-day administrator.
In the early 1970s, the temple underwent further renovation and improvements, with separate sanctums created for the principal deities, Sri Vinayagar, Sri Murugan and Sri Ambal. On 19 March 1975, a consecration ceremony was conducted under the leadership of Mr S. L. Perumal.
In 1979, the Ramar Bhajan Matt, which had been operating at Cross Street, relocated to the Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple. Soon after, in 1982, another major renovation of the temple was undertaken, and the Ramar Bhajan Matt was developed into a full-fledged temple.
In 1984, Mr S. L. P. Mohan, son of Mr S. L. Perumal, led the consecration ceremony for both temples.
In 1994, the temple’s volunteer ubayakars formed a registered society and played an important role in the management of the temple. Subsequently, the society was dissolved, and in 1998, a new Board of Trustees comprising seven members was constituted.
In 2003, the committee undertook further development projects, including the construction of a four-storey multi-purpose hall, as well as renovation and repair works for the temple’s deities. As part of these improvements, the sanctums of Sri Periyachi, Sri Muneeswaran and Sri Madurai Veeran were relocated within the temple premises.
These developments culminated in the Maha Kumbabishegam (consecration ceremony) of the temple, which was held on 23 January 2005.
The most recent Kumbabishegam was conducted on 9 December 2016. As part of the works, new sanctum was constructed for Sri Jambulingeswarar and Sri Akhilandeshwari, along with additional sanctums for Parivaara deities.
Today, Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple has grown into a vibrant religious and spiritual hub, serving the Hindu community and devotees from Singapore and beyond. Throughout the year, the temple conducts a wide range of poojas, prayers, festivals and religious observances, continuing its longstanding tradition of worship and community engagement.
